Walkers, runners and cyclists who use the Iron Horse Regional Trail through downtown Walnut Creek will lose access to a key stretch from Monday, Oct. 5, through Monday, Oct. 12.
The East Bay Regional Park District updated its alerts page Wednesday, Sept. 30, announcing that the trail segment between Mount Diablo Boulevard and Civic Park will shut down through Monday, Oct. 12. PG&E will use the time to perform vegetation management and wildlife enhancement work, according to the district's notice.
The district did not elaborate on the scope of PG&E's work or name the species involved. Its notice directs trail users with concerns to contact PG&E directly.
The district’s notice does not list a designated detour. The district advises users to follow signs at the work area and check its alerts page before heading out.
The 32-mile Iron Horse Regional Trail runs between Concord and Pleasanton along a former Southern Pacific Railroad right-of-way abandoned in 1978. The trail, completed in 2014, connects neighborhoods, businesses, schools, parks and BART stations across the East Bay. The downtown Walnut Creek segment passes through one of the trail's access points at Civic Park. The trail is normally open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.
The Oct. 5 date also marks the start of a separate, longer closure on the same trail. Contra Costa County plans repairs to the Robert I. Schroder pedestrian bridge over Treat Boulevard, as reported by the Bay Area Telegraph. That bridge section is expected to remain closed through Thursday, Dec. 31. The two projects affect different portions of the trail for different reasons.
Trail users can check for updates on the East Bay Regional Park District's Iron Horse Regional Trail page. The district's non-emergency trail safety line is (510) 881-1833.
