The candidates

DeSaulnier, a Democrat from Concord, won a seventh term in the U.S. House. He entered Congress in 2015, according to his official congressional biography.

His political career began with his election to the Concord City Council in 1991. He went on to serve on the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors and in the state Legislature before winning his congressional seat.

He is the top Democrat on the House Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor and Pensions, according to his official website.

Frese, a Moraga resident and business owner, campaigned as a political outsider, according to his campaign website. He founded the snack brand Fat Snax, DanvilleSanRamon.com reported.

Where they differ

Cost of living was one area where both candidates’ platforms overlapped, though they proposed different solutions.

Frese’s platform called for ending deficit spending, banning Wall Street firms and hedge funds from buying single-family homes, and blocking foreign ownership of American farmland and family homes, according to his campaign website. He also advocated eight-year congressional term limits and a ban on congressional stock trading.

DeSaulnier emphasized research into how remote work could ease traffic congestion and emissions, along with affordable housing and local transit improvements, according to his campaign’s issues page.
