Walnut Creek will honor military veterans with a free public ceremony at the Lesher Center for the Arts on Wednesday, Nov. 11, starting at 11 a.m.

Marine Corps Maj. Patrick Lieneweg will deliver the keynote address at the annual observance, which runs until noon at 1601 Civic Drive. Mayor Kevin Wilk will welcome attendees, according to a city press release issued Tuesday, Oct. 27.

The ceremony begins with the ringing of 11 bells in honor of veterans. A presentation of colors, the national anthem and the Pledge of Allegiance follow. Rabbi Daniel Stein of Congregation B’nai Shalom will deliver the invocation.

The Walnut Creek Concert Band will perform throughout the program, including “With Honor” and “Salute to the Armed Forces,” a piece recognizing each military service branch. A moment of silence and blessing will precede closing remarks from the mayor.

The city said this year’s ceremony will focus on community, service and honoring veterans who face hardship after their service. The observance will also remember veterans dealing with wounds, housing insecurity or grief, and recognize veterans’ military service and civilian contributions.

Admission is free.

Wilk said in the release that honoring veterans goes beyond gratitude on a single day. He urged continued assistance for veterans and recognition of their contributions throughout the year.
