A $168 parcel tax for the Acalanes Union High School District (AUHSD) held above the two-thirds threshold in early returns from Tuesday, Nov. 3. The measure would send an estimated $6 million a year to local high schools, including Las Lomas in Walnut Creek.

Measure W had 69.99% support as of the county’s official 11:43 p.m. election-night report. The tally showed 27,003 “yes” votes and 11,576 “no” votes. The measure needs two-thirds approval to pass.

Counting has not finished, and the measure’s support could shift as officials process remaining ballots. The results have not been certified.

What Measure W would do

Measure W would levy a $168 annual parcel tax for eight years across the district, beginning in fiscal year 2027-28, according to the district’s resolution. The ballot language cites teacher recruitment and retention, advanced STEM and arts courses, and class-size limits, according to the district’s Measure W page.

The tax would generate an estimated $6 million annually for local high schools.

AUHSD serves students in Lafayette, Moraga, Orinda and Walnut Creek. Its four comprehensive high schools are Acalanes, Campolindo, Las Lomas and Miramonte.

Why the district sought new funding

The district said parcel tax funding had not increased in 16 years. AUHSD made more than $4 million in budget cuts over the past two years, according to the district’s Measure W page. Those cuts affected elective courses, libraries, counseling and student enrichment.

The district described state funding for its schools as among the lowest in California, and said local taxes and education foundations help cover its funding needs.

Exemptions and oversight

Measure W requires a citizens’ oversight committee and independent audits, according to the district. Revenue would remain local and support the measure’s educational purposes. The district says the state cannot redirect it.

If the measure passes, homeowners 65 and older would be eligible for a primary-residence exemption. The district’s FAQ also lists exemptions for qualifying recipients of Supplemental Security Income or Social Security Disability Insurance, regardless of age.
