Walnut Creek drivers using the Caldecott Tunnel on State Route 24 should expect overnight lane reductions Tuesday, Oct. 27, and Wednesday, Oct. 28, when Caltrans is scheduled to close one bore each night for inspections and maintenance.
The closures run from 10 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. the following morning, according to a Caltrans announcement. All times are Pacific.
The remaining schedule is:
- Tuesday, Oct. 27: Eastbound Bore 1 closes from 10 p.m. until 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28.
- Wednesday, Oct. 28: Westbound Bore 3 closes from 10 p.m. until 4:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 29.
Tuesday’s closure affects eastbound traffic traveling from Oakland toward Walnut Creek. Wednesday’s closure affects westbound traffic heading toward Oakland.
At least one bore in each direction will remain open during the work, according to Caltrans. Electronic signs will guide drivers through the area.
The agency described the work as fire safety inspections and routine maintenance. All closures are weather-dependent and subject to change.
Broader tunnel rehabilitation
Caltrans also has a broader rehabilitation project for Bores 1, 2 and 3 between Orinda and Oakland.
A Caltrans funding announcement identifies $267 million for the rehabilitation and ventilation upgrades. The project page lists state and federal funding sources.
The work includes repairing cracks and water damage in tunnel walls and ceilings, upgrading electrical and lighting systems, and installing ventilation fans and fire-suppression sprinklers. Construction has a tentative completion date of fall 2029.
Caltrans advises drivers to expect delays and allow extra time.
