The Petco at 2820 Ygnacio Valley Road in Walnut Creek will shut its doors for good on Monday, Sept. 21.

The store sits in The Orchards shopping center at the corner of Ygnacio Valley Road and Oak Grove Road, next to Safeway. It opened in September 2016 as one of 13 new Petco locations nationwide, the Bay Area Telegraph reported. The closure comes almost exactly a decade later.

Neither Petco nor the landlord has confirmed a reason for the closing.

No replacement tenant has been announced.

The closure comes amid a wave of store closures nationwide: Petco projected 15 to 20 net closures for its full fiscal year during the company's second-quarter earnings call in early September, though the company has not said which locations are affected.

Customers who have grooming appointments, training sessions or other services booked at the location should contact the store at 925-433-4194 to make arrangements before the closing date. The store is expected to run sales in the days leading up to Sept. 21.

Pet owners along the Ygnacio Valley Road corridor still have options nearby. A PetSmart sits across the street from the closing store. Woof Gang Bakery & Grooming, a pet food and grooming boutique owned by Paul and Cara Allen, opened in April at 1865 Ygnacio Valley Road in Ygnacio Plaza.

Petco's other Walnut Creek store, at 1301 S. California Blvd., will remain open. That location offers full-service grooming, dog training, a vaccination clinic, an animal hospital and an aquatics department. The chain's Concord store at 1150 Concord Ave. also stays open.

The Orchards has faced vacancy challenges in recent years. Commercial real estate broker John Cumbelich told Walnut Creek Magazine in November 2023 that the center had "added more space than the market can absorb." The Petco space will add to that vacancy count unless a new tenant is signed.
