Ten photos of dogs, cats, and a few other critters belonging to Walnut Creek Library staff are now tucked among the shelves of the children's section at 1644 N. Broadway, waiting for young detectives to track them down.
The free scavenger hunt launched Saturday, Aug. 1, and runs through Monday, Aug. 31. No registration is required. Kids can drop in any time the library is open, grab a checklist, and search for all 10 hidden pet images. Those who find every one and return their completed list to the information desk earn a prize.
The program targets preschoolers ages 3 to 5 and children ages 6 to 9, according to the library's event listing.
The Walnut Creek Library Foundation, which sponsors programming at the city's two public libraries, is funding the hunt. The Foundation also backs the library's monthly Insiders Meet Up for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The scavenger hunt arrives as Contra Costa County Library leadership is encouraging residents to treat local branches as summer destinations. County Librarian Alison McKee, in her August 2026 message published Friday, July 31, specifically named the Walnut Creek branch as one of the system's larger locations worth exploring during a "staycation."
Library hours are Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Friday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Families needing accommodations can call (925) 977-3340 at least three days ahead of their visit.
