A two-alarm fire damaged a single-family home in the 700 block of Woodwind Place in Walnut Creek on Tuesday, Aug. 4, sending one person to the hospital with smoke inhalation and killing two dogs.

The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District received the call at 3:39 p.m. reporting a house fire near Arbolado Drive, according to Bay City News via SFGate. The first crew on scene found heavy smoke pouring from the eaves of the single-story residence, and ConFire confirmed it as a working fire within minutes of arrival.

Flames then broke out from the rear of the structure, with fire extending to the exterior of the home. The incident commander escalated the response to a second alarm, bringing additional crews and equipment to the scene.

Firefighters knocked down the blaze by about 4:30 p.m., roughly 51 minutes after the initial call. But as of 5:30 p.m., crews remained on scene handling hot spots and transitioning to overhaul operations, ConFire said.

One civilian was transported to an area hospital for smoke inhalation. ConFire has not said whether the person was a resident of the home or a neighbor, and no update on the patient's condition has been released.

Two dogs perished in the fire.

The cause remains under investigation. ConFire has not announced a timeline for releasing findings or identified a point of origin for the blaze.

The fire broke out on a day when the National Weather Service had flagged elevated fire danger across the Walnut Creek area due to offshore winds and high temperatures pushing conditions well above normal for early August. No connection between the weather conditions and the cause of the house fire has been established.
