The person hospitalized after the two-alarm house fire Tuesday, Aug. 4, on Woodwind Place was not a resident of the home, fire officials told the East Bay Times, though they have not said whether the individual was a neighbor or how they came to be injured.

The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District is now formally investigating the cause of the blaze in the 700 block of Woodwind Place, near Arbolado Drive. No timeline for releasing findings has been announced, and no point of origin has been identified.

Con Fire received the call at 3:39 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, reporting a fire at the single-family home, and crews arrived to find visible flames and smoke, according to Claycord. The incident commander escalated the response to a second alarm.

Crews knocked down the fire by about 4:30 p.m. But firefighters remained on scene handling hot spots and other issues until at least 5:30 p.m., according to Claycord.

Residents escaped; two dogs did not

The home's residents got out safely on their own before firefighters arrived, officials told the East Bay Times. Two dogs were found dead inside the home.

The hospitalized person was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. As of Wednesday, Aug. 5, it was not known whether they remained in the hospital.

No damage estimate for the home has been released.

Con Fire has not scheduled a press conference or set a deadline for its investigation into the fire's cause. The fire broke out on a day when the National Weather Service had flagged elevated fire danger across the Walnut Creek area due to offshore winds and high temperatures, though no connection between weather conditions and the fire's cause has been established.
