Northgate High School's girls volleyball program opens tryouts Monday, Aug. 10, at the school gym, with separate sessions for freshmen and upperclassmen running through Wednesday, Aug. 12.

The three-day tryout window comes just four days into the new MDUSD school year, and the program is enforcing a strict eligibility rule: only students cleared through Sportsnet may participate. No exceptions.

Grace Lau, who posted the tryout announcement Saturday, Aug. 8, on the Northgate Broncos athletics site, emphasized that Sportsnet clearance is non-negotiable.

Incoming freshmen try out from 4 to 6 p.m. each day. They're asked to change after school, head to the gym and help with equipment setup by 3:45 p.m.

Students in grades 10 through 12 have the evening slot, 6:15 to 8:15 p.m. Upperclassmen should arrive no earlier than 6 p.m. for check-in.

What to bring

Players must wear a plain white or solid-color T-shirt. Northgate shirts are acceptable. The program also asks athletes to bring water, knee pads and any support gear such as ankle braces.

Pre-season background

The tryouts cap a structured pre-season that began in early July, according to a post on the Northgate Broncos athletics site. The program ran week-long camps at the Northgate gym for middle schoolers and freshmen July 6–10 and for incoming sophomores through seniors July 7–9. Conditioning sessions followed July 27–30 at the beach volleyball courts and Aug. 3–5 in the gym.

Any student who hasn't completed Sportsnet clearance should do so before Monday, Aug. 10. The program's first regular-season game date has not yet been announced.
