A Martinez man suspected of burglarizing three Lafayette homes was arrested in Walnut Creek on Thursday, Aug. 13, while driving a stolen vehicle, one day after he fled from detectives serving a search warrant.
Kohlton Kumnick, 34, was taken into custody by Lafayette detectives and the Contra Costa Sheriff's Office special enforcement unit known as the J-Team, according to a Lafayette Police Department press release published Friday, Aug. 14. He is being held at the Martinez Detention Facility on $220,000 bail.
The three residential burglaries occurred in Lafayette during the week of Tuesday, Aug. 11. Lafayette detectives identified Kumnick as the suspect and obtained a search warrant for a home on the 3800 block of Alhambra Way in Martinez.
When detectives arrived to serve the warrant on Wednesday, Aug. 12, Kumnick fled. Officers from the Walnut Creek Police Department, the Contra Costa Sheriff's Office, Martinez PD and East Bay Regional Park Police joined the search but did not locate him that day.
Stolen property from the Lafayette burglaries was recovered inside the Martinez home.
The next day, detectives and the J-Team spotted Kumnick driving a stolen vehicle in Walnut Creek and made the arrest.
Kumnick faces eight charges: burglary, vehicle theft, possession of stolen property, felon in possession of a firearm, grand theft, identity theft, resisting arrest and narcotics offenses.
Walnut Creek PD recorded 54 burglary and breaking-and-entering incidents in the city during the first five months of 2026, according to department crime statistics. April saw the highest monthly count at 20.
