Walnut Creek BART commuters will need to adjust their morning routines starting Monday, Aug. 10, when a permanent systemwide schedule restructuring shifts Yellow Line departure times by a few minutes.

The change is part of the "Big Sync," a Bay Area-wide effort in which multiple transit agencies coordinate schedule changes twice a year. BART's piece of it re-spaces trains on the Yellow, Red, Green and Blue lines to even out gaps between arrivals and cut transfer wait times at key stations. BART's Operations Planning Department developed the new timetable through what the agency described as "creative train movement efficiencies," and the restructuring requires no additional operating budget, according to a BART news release posted July 9.

What changes for Walnut Creek riders

Yellow Line trains in San Francisco will shift from uneven 5-and-15-minute gaps to an even 10 minutes apart, reducing crowding and wait times for Richmond-bound riders, according to a detailed breakdown published by Contra Costa News. Riders heading from Antioch through Walnut Creek who transfer toward Richmond at MacArthur Station will save 17 minutes, with a new four-minute cross-platform transfer from Platform 4 to Platform 1.

Connections to the BART-to-Antioch diesel service at the Pittsburg transfer platform should also improve. Under the current schedule, Yellow Line trains often run slightly late because they hold for an Orange Line train at 19th Street/Oakland, causing compounding delays at Pittsburg. The new timetable has the Orange Line train arriving sooner.

The longer 10-car peak trains that BART added to the Yellow Line on July 20 will carry over to the new schedule. Eight of the busiest morning trains and six afternoon trains run at 10 cars, up from nine.

The mechanical fix behind it all

The core change happens at Daly City Station, which will now operate as a center platform station. All San Francisco-bound trains will depart from a single platform, and Blue and Green line trains terminating at Daly City will exit to the nearby yard without blocking Yellow and Red line through-service.

That single operational tweak ripples across the system.

What riders should do

BART has not published a station-by-station comparison of old versus new departure times. Riders must check their specific trip using BART's Trip Planner at bart.gov/planner or the PDF timetables at bart.gov/schedules/pdfs, which already reflect the Aug. 10 schedule for trips dated Monday or later.

Late-evening riders should note that construction delays will continue Sunday through Thursday after 9 p.m. between Daly City and Millbrae, where crews are replacing the aged train control system with a new Communications-Based Train Control system.

The next Big Sync winter alignment is expected in mid-January, though no specific date has been set.
