Walnut Creek commuters who ride the BART Yellow Line should brace for overnight delays of 20 to 25 minutes in early August as crews perform planned rail maintenance on the line.

BART will reduce Yellow Line service from two tracks to one during overnight maintenance windows, according to a Patch report citing BART service alerts published Monday, July 27. Work is scheduled to begin at midnight each night and continue until regular morning service starts.

The planned maintenance is separate from the equipment failure that suspended Yellow Line service between Pleasant Hill and Lafayette on Monday, July 27, disrupting the morning rush. BART reported that problem at about 5:50 a.m. and restored service by about 7 a.m.

What's happening

Crews will perform rail "destressing" on the Yellow Line, a process that reduces heat-related stress on the rails and improves long-term reliability, according to BART. The agency had originally planned the work for July but postponed it to early August.

The next confirmed phase of the project runs Tuesday, August 4 through Thursday, August 6 between the North Concord and Pittsburg/Bay Point stations. That segment sits east of Walnut Creek on the Yellow Line, but riders traveling through or to those stations during overnight hours will face the delays.

BART's language describing August 4-6 as "the next phase" suggests earlier phases of the maintenance may also be scheduled. The agency had not released specific dates for any additional phases as of Monday, July 27.

The Yellow Line runs from Antioch through Pittsburg/Bay Point, North Concord, Concord, Pleasant Hill, Walnut Creek, and Lafayette toward San Francisco International Airport. Walnut Creek commuters use the line for both eastbound and westbound travel, meaning any single-tracking on the corridor can ripple through their trips.

BART has not confirmed whether earlier maintenance phases will affect the Pleasant Hill-to-Lafayette segment that includes Walnut Creek. That remains the key unknown.
