BART began running longer trains on the Blue Line on Tuesday, Sept. 15.

The agency said on X that it is adding 10-car and 8-car trains during morning and afternoon peak hours. An additional 8-car train is also joining the Green Line. The expansion is the latest in a summer-long push to boost capacity across the system.

The Blue Line runs between Dublin/Pleasanton and Daly City. Walnut Creek riders use the Yellow Line, which already received 10-car peak-hour trains in July. But the Blue Line additions ease crowding systemwide, particularly for riders transferring between lines at stations like MacArthur.

The Sept. 15 changes follow a July 20 expansion that brought 10-car trains back to the Red and Yellow lines during peak commute hours. BART said at the time it was the first regular 10-car weekday service in more than six years. The agency also extended two morning Green Line trains and one afternoon Blue Line train from six to eight cars that month.

Ridership keeps climbing.

BART recorded its highest monthly ridership since the pandemic in June 2026, with trips up 18.6% compared to June 2025, Claycord reported. Ridership has recovered to about 56% of pre-pandemic levels. BART said in July that the longer trains were driven by ridership data and that the agency would continue adjusting service based on demand.

A systemwide schedule overhaul on Aug. 10 also adjusted gaps for Dublin- and Berryessa-bound Green and Blue Line trains. The longest waits dropped from 17 minutes to 12, though some shorter gaps widened from three minutes to eight, KQED reported.

The train additions coincide with All Aboard Bay Area Transit Day, organized by Bay Area transit agencies and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission. BART staff are stationed throughout the system handing out stickers. Riders spotted wearing one later in the day can receive BART swag while supplies last.

BART has not announced a timeline for further train-length expansions beyond Sept. 15.
