The Walnut Creek School District (WCSD) board took up textbook certification and a construction closeout at Walnut Heights Elementary on Monday, Aug. 31.
The board's agenda listed four action items for the meeting at the district office, 960 Ygnacio Valley Road. They included Resolution 26-27-02, a determination that every student has sufficient textbooks and instructional materials aligned to state standards, and a separate certification of instructional materials for the 2026-27 school year. California law requires the district to hold a public hearing on textbook sufficiency each year before the board can certify compliance.
The agenda also called for approval of Resolution 26-27-04, a Notice of Completion for the Walnut Heights Elementary modular building project, along with Change Order #2 on the same project. The district has not released details on the change order's cost or scope.
Vote results have not been posted as of Sept. 2.
Walnut Heights modular project nears completion
The modular building work at Walnut Heights, 4064 Walnut Boulevard, is part of the district's broader Measure J program. Voters approved the $134 million bond in 2022 to modernize all seven WCSD elementary campuses. Full completion across the district is expected by fall 2028.
Phase 1 interior upgrades at Walnut Heights wrapped up in summer 2025. Phase 2, which began in summer 2026, includes new playgrounds, outdoor learning areas, library enhancements, a single secure entry point, and parking lot accessibility improvements.
Board members attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Walnut Heights on Aug. 11 to mark the milestone. Superintendent Jon Campopiano, in his first year leading the roughly 3,600-student district, noted the progress in an Aug. 12 back-to-school letter to families, writing that construction projects at Buena Vista, Walnut Heights and Murwood were nearing completion.
The five-member board is led by President Wenlei Johnson. Other members are Clerk Aimee Moss and trustees Heidi Hernandez Gatty, Zetta Reicker and Sarah Talach.
The next regular board meeting is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 21.
