After 32 years without a permanent home, Diablo Ballet has moved into its first fixed base in Walnut Creek's Shadelands business district.

The new facility, called the Diablo Ballet Center for Dance, sits at 490 N. Wiget Lane on the corner of Wiget and Lennon lanes. The company held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, April 21, according to a post on Diablo Ballet's Instagram account. The space houses the company's professional dancers, the Diablo Ballet School, and expanded studios for student training.

The move caps a capital campaign that included a $500,000 matching contribution from an unnamed donor, according to the company's November 2025 Nutcracker Suite playbill. At that time, Diablo Ballet said it still needed to raise $130,000 to close the campaign. The April ribbon-cutting suggests the fundraising goal was met.

The Shadelands location gives a permanent base to an organization that also runs what it describes as the first ballet school in Contra Costa County operated by a professional company. The Diablo Ballet School opened in 2019 and is now housed at the new center, according to the company's website.

Lauren Jonas, artistic director and co-founder, has led the company since she and co-founder Ashraf Habibullah launched it in 1994. The organization employs 10 dancers who have performed across the United States, Europe, and South America, according to a Pleasant Hill Chamber of Commerce profile. Its PEEK outreach program has reached more than 68,000 underserved children in Alameda and Contra Costa counties since 1995, according to the playbill.

Diablo Magazine profiled the milestone in a July 17 feature by Samantha Durbin, noting that the company's 32nd anniversary year included a new production of Romeo and Juliet choreographed by Penny Saunders, resident choreographer at Grand Rapids Ballet.

No 2026-2027 performance season schedule at the new Shadelands facility has been announced. Classes are already underway at 490 N. Wiget Lane.
